How providing washable pads for girls can transform their lives in our villages
In many rural villages, there’s a silent barrier keeping young girls from going to school—a barrier that’s often misunderstood or overlooked by those who have never had to face it. For many girls, the onset of their first period is the moment they stop going to school. The reason is simple yet profound: they don’t have access to proper hygiene products, specifically sanitary pads. For these girls, menstruation becomes a source of profound embarrassment and shame, often forcing them to stay home for days each month, missing out on their education and the opportunities it brings.
But there is good news. Providing these girls with the right products, particularly sanitary pads, can change their lives in profound and lasting ways. Beyond offering comfort and dignity during their menstrual cycle, having access to pads can reduce early marriages, prevent sexual violence, and improve mental health, self-esteem, and personal hygiene. It can even restore a sense of privacy, giving these girls the ability to manage their menstruation discreetly and with confidence.
Yet, the importance of menstrual hygiene goes beyond just physical health—it has the potential to empower these young girls to continue their education, pursue their dreams, and break free from the cycle of poverty.
Why washable Pads Are a Lifesaver
When a young girl begins menstruating, she needs at least seven pads per month to comfortably manage her period. Unfortunately, in our villages, many girls don’t have access to this basic necessity. Without pads, they often resort to using unhygienic alternatives, which can lead to infections, discomfort, and a sense of embarrassment that prevents them from attending school. This creates a huge barrier to their education and future success.
In our ongoing effort to combat this issue, we’ve made strides in providing pads to the girls in our villages. Unfortunately, the need far exceeds the supply. This year, we were able to collect a total of 700 pads, but this was far from enough. With 11 schools in our network, and hundreds of girls relying on us for support, we still found ourselves facing a significant gap. We were only able to provide three pads per girl, but this was insufficient for four of the schools.
The result? Hundreds of girls are currently staying at home and not attending school simply because they lack menstrual products. These girls are missing out on an education that could change the trajectory of their lives, all because of something so preventable—lack of access to sanitary pads.
The Power of reusable Pads
The pads we distribute are not just any pads—they are washable, reusable, 100% eco-friendly, and leak-proof. Manufactured in the USA, these pads are super absorbent and made without any harmful chemicals. These features make them safe, comfortable, and practical for daily use, ensuring that the girls who receive them will have the means to manage their menstruation hygienically and with dignity.
But providing pads is only part of the solution. To ensure that the girls can properly care for their pads, we also distribute other essential items like underwear, ziplock bags for safe storage, and a bar of soap for washing. These basic hygiene products are just as important as the pads themselves because they allow the girls to maintain their health and comfort throughout the month.
Furthermore, we believe it’s crucial to provide clean water for washing these pads. Access to safe, bacteria-free water ensures that the girls can clean their pads properly and avoid infections. If we could, we would also distribute water filters to ensure that every girl has access to safe water for both drinking and cleaning.
How You Can Help
To help us provide sanitary pads, hygiene products, and water filters to more girls, we need your support. Your donation of just $5, $10, or $20 can go a long way in ensuring that these girls don’t miss out on school because of something they have no control over. A small contribution will help us provide:
- 7 pads per girl, enough for an entire month
- Underwear, soap, and ziplock bags for safe storage and cleaning
- Water filters, to ensure the girls can wash their pads with clean, safe water
Every little bit counts, and no donation is too small. For just $5, you can provide a month’s worth of pads for a girl—giving her the ability to attend school, focus on her studies, and maintain her dignity. For just $10, you can help two girls stay in school each month.
Why Your Support Matters
Access to menstrual hygiene products is a fundamental need, yet it’s one that many take for granted. In our villages, the lack of basic sanitary products creates barriers to education, health, and personal dignity. By supporting this initiative, you’re giving these girls the chance to break free from the cycle of poverty, stay in school, and shape their own futures.
Together, we can help ensure that every girl, no matter where she comes from, has the tools she needs to succeed. Please consider making a donation today. Your generosity will not only change the lives of individual girls but also transform entire communities, one girl at a time.
Thank you for your support and for making a difference.
