End child poverty and illiteracy is a guiding principle that fuels the Mumzy Children Relief Foundation (CRF), a non-profit organization that serves impoverished communities in Africa and the United States. Through initiatives focused on children’s education, nutrition, and community health, we work toward sustainable development, with a particular commitment to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each program CRF provides builds a pathway out of poverty for vulnerable children and communities, helping to create a future of opportunities, health, and education.

Why Supporting Children’s Education is Essential

Research (1) shows that children with reliable access to food and education grow up healthier, achieve more academically, and have greater opportunities in life. Did you know that as of 2023, nearly 14% of U.S. children under 18 years old – approximately 10 million children – were living in poverty? (1)(2)

This represents a significant increase from the historic low of 5.2% recorded in 2021

Recent Trends

The child poverty rate has risen sharply over the past two years (1)

YearPercentage Increase
20215.2 % ( historic low)
202212.4%
202313.7%

This dramatic increase is largely attributed to the expiration of pandemic-era support programs, particularly the expanded Child Tax Credit.

Some key factors contributing to child poverty in the US include;

  • Expiration of pandemic-era aid programs, including universal school meals and Medicaid expansions (1)
  • Rising costs of living, especially housing expenses(1)
  • Discontinuation of the expanded Child Tax Credit after 2021 (1)
  • Uneven economic recovery affecting low-income families disproportionately

What is the Common Impact of Poverty on American Children?

Child poverty has serious, lasting consequences that extend well beyond childhood. Children growing up in poverty are at increased risk for behavioral, social, emotional, and health challenges, often facing higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. (1) Limited resources in low-income households also mean reduced access to quality education, impacting academic outcomes and future career opportunities. This educational disadvantage can hinder upward mobility, reinforcing a cycle of poverty. (1)

The impact of intergenerational poverty is especially prevalent among Black and Native American children, who often face systemic barriers rooted in historical inequities. For these communities, poverty becomes an enduring cycle that passes from one generation to the next, limiting social and economic progress. (1)

Addressing child poverty, therefore, is crucial not only for the immediate well-being of children but also for breaking cycles of disadvantage and fostering long-term societal health and equity.

Our Activities in Pembroke Township, Illinois, USA

Our current efforts to end child poverty in the U.S. are focused in Illinois, particularly in Pembroke Township.

Recent census data reveals that 1.7 million people in Illinois live below the poverty line, with over 784,000 experiencing extreme poverty.

Pembroke Township, a rural community with around 3,000 residents, is one of the hardest-hit areas in Illinois. Located 70 miles south of Chicago near the Indiana border, Pembroke faces especially high poverty rates, highlighting the urgent need for support in rural regions.

By providing children with these basic needs, we support individual growth and help break the cycle of poverty that impacts entire communities. Programs like donate to children’s education and sponsor a child’s education address immediate educational and nutritional needs, allowing children in underserved areas to focus on learning and personal development.
